Green IT - Time to rethink

Since Al Gore has received an Oscar for his documentary "An inconvenient Truth“, the discussion about the climate change has also reached the computer centres. Simple estimations of the energy consumption prove how much energy can be economized, if the devices and the systems would implement and use efficiently the existing technologies.

Until now, especially criteria like the security, reliability and the price/performance ratio of IT systems stood in the foreground. Recently the criteria energy consumption and efficiency have received an increased attention in particular the long time storage. Responsible is next to the upcoming environmental awareness, the constantly rising energy expenses that rates double in computer centres – through the power consumption of the IT devices as well as the air conditioning and uninterrupted power supply.

TÜV Certificaten JVC/DISC

The constant growth of the to-store data quantity, with a yearly increase ratio of at least 30-40%, makes the rethinking necessary. The four existing storage technologies: Solid State Disk (SSD), Hard Disk (HD), optical Disc (Blu-ray/DVD/CD) and Tape can – used in the right ‘Mix’ - not only increase the availability, the security and the reliability of the total system, but also optimize the legal Compliance requirements as well as the IT infrastructure energy efficiency.

The with INCOM traditionally strong domain of the optical storage systems is represented as major now not only in matter of safety and longevity but also in terms of energy consumption. The TÜV Saarland group has submitted two optical systems of the DISC and JVC companies to an examination and certified them as safe and the most energy efficient archives on the market.
